During our recent empowerment activities in Katsina State, the 9jafoodfiesta team took a meaningful moment to step away from training halls and classrooms — and step into history.
We visited the Kusugu Well in Daura, a site that holds deep historical and cultural importance in Nigeria’s northern story. For many, it’s just a well. But for those who know — it’s a symbol of power, heritage, and the legacy of leadership.

Why the Kusugu Well Matters
The Kusugu Well is famously tied to the story of Bayajidda, a legendary figure believed to have slain the mystical snake Sarki, who once prevented the people of Daura from fetching water freely.
The story goes that only the queen of Daura, Queen Daurama, was allowed to fetch water from the well once a week. When Bayajidda came to the town and heard about the suffering of the people, he took on the challenge to free them — and succeeded. In gratitude, Queen Daurama married him, and from their union came the beginning of the seven Hausa states (Hausa Bakwai).
To this day, the well remains a symbol of bravery, freedom, and the power of one person to change an entire community.
Why It Matters to Us at 9jafoodfiesta
As an organization committed to empowering youths, women, and people with disabilities across Nigeria, the story of Kusugu Well resonates with us deeply.
It reflects what we believe in:
That empowerment is about liberation — freedom from poverty, from ignorance, from helplessness.
That skills and courage go hand in hand.
And that one person, properly empowered, can ignite change in a family, a town, or even a whole state.
Visiting this site was not just tourism — it was a reminder of the heritage we stand on, and the future we’re building.
As we continue to train and equip 2,000 people per state across Nigeria, this visit gave us a renewed sense of purpose and pride. The youth we’re training today are the Bayajiddas of tomorrow — solving problems, freeing communities, and rewriting history with their skills.
If you ever find yourself in Katsina, don’t just pass through. Visit Daura. Touch history. And be inspired.
