When we launched our empowerment initiative, Abuja was our starting point. It wasn’t just our first state — it was our testing ground, our classroom, and the birthplace of what would become a life-changing movement across Nigeria.
We came to Abuja with a mission: to empower youths, women, and persons with disabilities with practical skills in ICT, agriculture, culinary arts, and fashion. But we left with more than we expected — we were empowered too. Here are five unforgettable lessons Abuja taught us.
1. Many People Just Needed a Chance
It became clear from Day 1: there are so many people with incredible potential who just need one thing — opportunity.
We met participants who had never used a laptop before but ended the training designing simple graphics. Some had never cooked beyond their home kitchen, yet they were confidently preparing professional dishes and pastries after just a few weeks.
One participant told us, “Nobody has ever chosen me for anything before.” That sentence alone reminded us why this work matters.
2. The Hunger to Learn Was Real
We saw passion in its rawest form.
Trainees would arrive long before classes started and stay back after sessions ended. The energy in the room was contagious. From questions during practicals to peer-to-peer mentoring, they didn’t just show up — they showed out.
We quickly realized: when people are given something valuable, they treasure it deeply.
3. Most People Underestimate What They Can Do
Watching our Abuja participants grow was like witnessing a quiet miracle.
Some walked into the training center shy, anxious, and unsure of themselves. But by Graduation Day, they were presenting confidently, showcasing their work, and speaking up with pride.
It was proof that people are more capable than they believe — all it takes is the right environment.
4. Community Matters More Than We Thought
We saw strangers become teammates, cheerleaders, and even family.
Participants shared data, helped each other catch up, and stood side by side on tough days. The WhatsApp groups are still active today — with trainees exchanging ideas, jobs, and encouragement.
We didn’t just train individuals — we built a network.
5. Empowerment Has a Ripple Effect
One of the biggest surprises? Many trainees became empowerers themselves.
After learning new skills, they went home and started training their siblings, friends, and even neighbors. Some launched small side hustles. Others became community voices, telling more people about 9jafoodfiesta.
It taught us that when you empower one person, you plant a seed that grows in many directions.
Abuja Was the Spark That Lit the Fire
Abuja taught us to trust the process, believe in people, and always start — even if you’re unsure. It laid the foundation for every state we’ve trained in since.
We’re proud of every single person who trained with us in Abuja. You helped shape the heart of this movement. Thank you for trusting us. Thank you for growing with us.
This is just the beginning — and it all started with you. 💛
